چکیده
This paper presents low-power versions of two circuits often used in analog VLSI models of neural systems. The circuits model the spiking behavior of the axon hillock and the pulse propagation of axons.

Low-power Silicon Neurons, Axons, and Synapses
Power consumption is the dominant design issue for battery-powered electronic devices. Biologically-inspired sensory preprocessors may be an important component of portable computing devices that require real-world visual or auditory input. The silicon neural design style presented in (Mead, 1989; Andreou et al., 1991) naturally supports low-power VLSI design; in this design style, MOS transist...
متن کاملTowards a photonic spiking neuron: excitability in a silicon-on-insulator microring
For certain input power and wavelength settings, high Q-factor silicon-on-insulator rings self-pulsate. Thereby, they seem suited to emulate the behaviour of spiking neurons on a photonic chip. To gain insight in the possible excitation mechanisms a phase-plane analysis is needed. In this paper, we develop the theory needed to construct such phase portraits for a coupled mode theory description...
متن کاملDigital Spiking Silicon Neuron: Concept and Behaviors in GJ-coupled Network
Silicon neuron is electrical circuit that is analogous to biological neurons. Most spiking silicon neurons comprise analog circuit technology. We propose a new concept of spiking silicon neuron that is composed of only digital circuit technology. The system equations were designed by a mathematical-model-based design method that we proposed for analog silicon neurons in previous works. This all...

We present an electronic circuit modelling the spike generation process in the biological neuron. This simple circuit is capable of simulating the spiking behaviour of several different types of biological neurons. At the same time, the circuit is small so that many neurons can be implemented on a single silicon chip. This is important, as neural computation obtains its power not from a single ...

Since the properties of transistors are well matched to the properties of ionic channels in nerve membranes, Mead has advocated the use of analog VLSI for the construction of arti cial neural systems [1]. The current state of the art in realistic single-neuron designs is the silicon neuron of Mahowald and Douglas [2], which exhibits the spiking, refractory, and adaptation characteristics of cor...
